Chapter 8: Questions to Ask Before You Order Anything

Homeowner and cabinet professional reviewing a checklist of questions before ordering

Chapter 8

Questions to Ask Before You Order Anything

By this point in the manual, you’ve seen me mention a version of this chapter more than once. Chapter 3 gave you three questions specific to RTA. Chapter 7 gave you questions tied to specific mistakes. This chapter pulls all of it together into one list — the questions I believe every homeowner should ask before they order a single cabinet, from anyone, anywhere, RTA or custom, me or someone else.

I’m not asking you to memorize this. Print it, save it, bring it to your next conversation with any cabinet company. A company that can’t answer these clearly is telling you something important before you’ve spent a dollar.

Questions About the Product Itself

What is the box actually made of — plywood, particleboard, solid wood, or some combination? Ask specifically, not generally. “All wood” can mean different things to different companies, and the honest ones will tell you exactly what’s in the box versus what’s just the door front.

Is the hardware soft-close standard, or an upgrade? This should never be an upsell in 2026. If it’s not standard, ask why.

Is this face frame or frameless construction, and do you understand what that means for how the inside of the cabinet looks and functions? Neither is wrong, but they’re different, and you should know which one you’re buying before it arrives.

Questions About Timing

What is the actual current lead time for this specific door style and series — not the brand in general? I covered this in Chapter 4, and it’s worth asking again here because it’s this important.

Has that lead time changed recently? Supply chains shift, and a quote from a few months ago may not reflect today’s reality.

What happens if the order is delayed? Is there a backup plan for your kitchen in the meantime, and does the company communicate proactively if a ship date moves, or do you have to chase them for updates?

Questions About Cost

Is this quote the final number, or are there predictable additions — freight, delivery restrictions, installation — that aren’t included yet? Ask this directly. A number that grows after you’ve committed is a bad surprise nobody wants.

What does the price difference between door styles actually reflect? Is it purely aesthetic, or does it also reflect a real difference in material or construction? You deserve to know what you’re paying for, not just what you’re paying.

Questions About Who Puts It Together

Who is actually going to assemble and install these cabinets, and what is their experience specifically with this brand or construction type? I covered why this matters in Chapter 7 — a well-built cabinet installed poorly still fails.

If something arrives damaged or doesn’t fit correctly, what is the actual process to fix it, and who is responsible for coordinating that fix? Get this answer before you order, not after something goes wrong.

The One Meta-Question Behind All of These

Here’s the honest test I’d apply to any of these questions, from anyone selling you cabinets: did they answer clearly and specifically, or did they redirect you back to how beautiful the kitchen will look? A company confident in their product and their process will answer every one of these without flinching. One that dodges, deflects, or changes the subject is telling you something worth paying attention to.

You don’t need 30 years in this industry to ask good questions. You just need to know which questions matter. Now you do.
