Why Nobody Hands You This

Kitchen Cabinets Owner's Manual

Chapter 1

Why Nobody Hands You This

You can buy a car and get a manual thick enough to use as a doorstop. Buy a refrigerator and there’s a manual taped inside it. Even a $40 space heater comes with instructions.

Spend $15,000, $30,000, sometimes $50,000 or more on kitchen cabinets, and you get a brochure. Maybe a sales pitch. Maybe a showroom tour where someone walks you past the prettiest doors first and hopes you stop asking questions before you get to the ones that matter.

Nobody hands you the real manual. So I wrote one.

I’ve been in the cabinet industry for over 30 years — designing kitchens, installing them, running into every mistake a homeowner can make and watching how much it costs them when nobody warned them first. I’ve sold cabinets in 11 states. I’ve stood in kitchens after the truck left and the homeowner realized the lead time they were quoted didn’t match the timeline they needed. I’ve watched people fall in love with a door style without knowing what tier it actually sits in, or what that tier means for how the cabinet will hold up in five years.

This isn’t a sales pitch. There’s nothing in here gated behind a phone number you have to give up first. If you read every chapter of this and never buy a single cabinet from me, that’s fine. My goal is that when you’re done, you understand kitchen cabinets well enough that nobody can talk you into something you don’t actually want, and nobody can talk you out of something that’s actually right for your kitchen.

Here’s what you’ll find as this manual grows:

  • The four real tiers of cabinet quality, and what you actually get at each price point — not marketing language, just the truth about construction and materials.
  • What “RTA” really means, and why it scares people who shouldn’t be scared and doesn’t scare some people who should ask more questions.
  • Lead times — the single thing that wrecks more kitchen renovations than bad cabinet choices ever do.
  • How to figure out what your kitchen actually needs in terms of cabinet footage, not guesswork.
  • What a realistic budget looks like at every tier, with real numbers.
  • The expensive mistakes I’ve watched homeowners make, over and over, for three decades.
  • The questions you should ask before you order anything, from anyone, anywhere.
  • The storage features actually worth your money, and the ones that look good in a showroom and waste space in real life.
  • How remote kitchen design actually works, if you’re curious.
  • And the question I’ve asked myself on every single kitchen I’ve ever designed: what would I do if this was my house.

New chapters get added over time. Bookmark this page. This is the manual I wish someone had handed me the first time I ever stood in a kitchen trying to figure out what I was actually buying.
